Beric Dondarrion
Beric Dondarrion, the young Lord of Blackhaven, is a dashing and gallant figure from the stormlands, marked by his red-gold hair and a black satin cloak dusted with stars. He first appears in King's Landing during the Hand's tourney, where he rides through the Mud Gate with his banner of a night sky slashed with purple lightning, announcing his intention to win the tournament. His youthful valor and striking appearance make him a favorite among the commons, and he is noted for his skill in the joust, though he is ultimately unhorsed by Thoros of Myr after his own mount is killed in a previous match.
Mission to Deliver the King's Justice
When Eddard Stark, as the King's Hand, hears the testimony of villagers from Sherrer and Wendish Town who describe the brutal raids led by a giant of a man—clearly Gregor Clegane—he resolves to act. Despite his own broken leg, Ned Stark declares Gregor Clegane attainted and sentences him to death. He gives the command to Beric Dondarrion, charging him to ride west with a force of twenty men from each of several knights, plus twenty of Stark's own guards, to bring the king's justice to the false knight. Beric accepts the command with a bow, and the next morning he rides out at dawn with three banners: the crowned stag of the king, the direwolf of Stark, and his own forked lightning standard. The departure is a stirring spectacle, watched by Sansa Stark, who notes the fine appearance of the Winterfell men in their silvery mail and long grey cloaks.
The Trap at the Mummer's Ford
The mission proves to be a trap. As Beric's force crosses the Red Fork, the Lannisters fall upon them, ignoring the king's banner. Gregor Clegane takes them in the rear as they try to pull back across the Mummer's Ford. The result is a disaster: Ser Raymun Darry is killed, and most of the men from Winterfell are lost. Beric Dondarrion and a few others are believed to have escaped, but the expedition is shattered. This event marks a decisive escalation in the war, as it demonstrates the Lannisters' willingness to defy the crown's authority and attack under the king's own banner.
Outlaw Leader and Continued Resistance
Following the disaster at the Mummer's Ford, Beric Dondarrion does not vanish. Instead, he and the red priest Thoros of Myr become a persistent nuisance to Lord Tywin Lannister's foraging parties, raiding his supply lines and harassing his troops. Tywin Lannister, in a council after the Battle of the Green Fork, dismisses them as "a pair of Ned Stark's afterthoughts" and considers them a minor irritation, though he is clearly annoyed by their continued activity. Beric's survival and continued resistance mark him as a figure of defiance against Lannister power, a symbol that the king's justice, however compromised, has not been entirely extinguished. His name is later included in the list of those commanded by King Joffrey to present themselves and swear fealty, a decree that, given his actions, he is unlikely to obey.
